Virat Kohli Breaks Two Sachin Tendulkar Records, Creates History Against New Zealand
Virat Kohli creates history against New Zealand in the first ODI at Auckland, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar in two major records and becoming the first batter to achieve a remarkable milestone at number three.
Kohli scored 74 runs off 51 balls, hitting 13 fours and one six. His innings helped him add several records to his name and once again demonstrated his batting prowess.
Kohli completed his half-century in just 35 balls, hitting eight fours and one six. It was his 80th half-century in ODI cricket and the second-fastest fifty of his ODI career. His fastest ODI half-century came against Australia in Canberra in 2016, when he reached the milestone in just 34 balls.
Kohli's innings against New Zealand also saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar in the list of highest run-scorers while chasing in ODI cricket.
Kohli Surpasses Sachin in ODI Runs While Chasing
Virat Kohli became the highest run-scorer in ODI cricket while chasing, moving ahead of Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli has scored 8,740 runs in 169 innings across 180 matches while chasing.
Tendulkar, meanwhile, scored 8,720 runs in 242 matches in the same category. With this achievement, Kohli claimed the top position, surpassing the record held by the legendary Indian batter.
Breaks Sachin's Record in SENA Countries
Kohli also overtook Tendulkar in the number of 50-plus scores recorded in SENA countries, comprising South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.
With his innings against New Zealand, Kohli took his tally of 50 or more scores in these countries to 134. Tendulkar had registered 133 such scores in SENA countries, leaving Kohli ahead by one.
First Batter to Score 13,000 ODI Runs at No. 3
Kohli achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first batter in the world to cross 13,000 runs while batting at number three in ODI cricket.
He reached the landmark after scoring 12 runs in the match against New Zealand. Before Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar had crossed the 13,000-run mark in ODI cricket while batting at number two. Tendulkar scored 13,685 runs at that batting position.
Kohli's 74-run innings at Eden Park therefore added another significant chapter to his ODI career, as he surpassed Tendulkar in two major statistical records and became the first batter to score 13,000 ODI runs at the number-three position.
